Notes from my warm up on Articulation and fingers, using material from Mussorgsky's Night on a Bare Mountain. Please feel free to download the handout below and watch the live warm up.
Topics covered in this warm up video:
1. Breathing exercises without the flute
a) Exhale for 6 beats, inhale for 2; Exhale for 3, inhale for 1. When you have more time, try breathing in through the nose.
b) Pulsing "fff" for 6, inhale for 2; Pulse "fff" for 3, inhale for 1
c) "Suh, cha, suh, cha" - activating diaphragm and psoas.
2. Bell tones on the flute
a) Technique of moving lower lip to correct the pitch of playing loud to soft. Lower the airstream at the beginning, then lift the airstream as you get quieter.
b) Bell tones of different lengths: same movement, but quicker as the notes get shorter
c) Same exercise as in b) on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd harmonics
3. Finger coordination exercises based on some chromatic material from Mussorgsky's Night on a Bare Mountain. Semitones and whole tones, above and below.
4. Question and answer
a) Getting a clear start on low notes
b) Getting a good sound in the low register
